Community Development

A community flourishes when it can sustain itself with dignity.

Hasanah’s approach to community development begins with addressing pressing livelihood and wellbeing needs that are assessed through participatory consultation with the communities, recognizing that community ownership is the very foundation for broader resilience to be built upon.

We invest in skills development, wellbeing-enhancing and income-generating opportunities that enable individuals to develop their earning capacity and build more secure futures. This is complemented by support for community mobilization to strengthen foundational systems in improving access to essential needs and services, such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social cohesion, so that gains are not easily reversed.

Over time, stronger livelihoods and wellbeing create the conditions for greater confidence and participation, allowing communities to move forward with a renewed sense of possibility and control.

An Island at Sea, Holding Its Own

On a remote island in Semporna, a stateless community is building its own systems—across health, education, and livelihoods.

Omadal is a Sabahan island, situated off the eastern coast of Borneo, about an hour by boat from Semporna. The island is small; one could walk around much of its shoreline in under two hours at an easy pace.

This Food Court in Kuantan Proves that Trust can be Rebuilt

A working food court is quietly reshaping what recovery and reintegration can look like.

In the late afternoon, under the low hum of ceiling fans and the lingering heat of the day, 52-year-old Lea Rosnani Awang works behind the cashier’s counter at Kacik 1998 Food Court.

Hasanah Disaster Relief

Hasanah Disaster Relief (HDR), established in collaboration with Khazanah Nasional Berhad, serves as a responsive funding mechanism to support communities affected by disasters.

Across 2025 and into early 2026, the monsoon season brought significant flooding across several parts of the country, with the East Coast, Klang Valley, Sabah and Sarawak, as well as Johor among the most affected. Alongside this, fire-related incidents in both urban and rural settings further disrupted communities, often with little warning.

HDR enables timely mobilisation in moments like these, working with partners on the ground to support immediate relief and early recovery. These efforts sit alongside GDRN’s longer-term work, contributing to its cumulative nationwide impact.
From food and personal protective equipment to medical supplies and maternal and child healthcare, aid has been extended to both medical and non-medical communities. In some instances, assistance was mobilised within as swiftly as 72 hours, underscoring the initiative’s commitment to acting promptly in times of need.
